Dr. Xiao Shen is the Founder and CEO of Canton Biologics, where he focuses on developing integrated platforms that bridge biologics innovation with scalable and cost-efficient manufacturing. He holds a PhD in Biotechnology and Bioengineering from EPFL (Switzerland), where his research focused on recombinant protein expression and process development in animal cell systems. With a background in biotechnology and extensive experience, he has been dedicated to translating advanced expression technologies into practical solutions for both human and animal health.
At Canton Biologics, Dr. Shen leads the development of a high-titer CHO cell-based platform specifically designed to address one of the key bottlenecks in veterinary biologics: cost-of-goods (COGs). By integrating proprietary high-expression vector systems, chemically defined media, and optimized process strategies, his team has achieved monoclonal antibody titers of up to 39 g/L in a 20-day intensified fed-batch process. This enables a significant improvement in manufacturing efficiency while maintaining product quality, making recombinant biologics more economically viable for animal health applications.
Beyond protein therapeutics, Dr. Shen is also advancing next-generation vaccine technologies through a structure-based nanoparticle polymer antigen platform. Targeting major veterinary pathogens such as coronaviruses, herpesviruses, and flaviviruses, this approach offers enhanced flexibility in antigen design and improved production efficiency compared to conventional vaccine formats, including inactivated and VLP-based approaches.
By combining high-yield CHO expression systems with end-to-end development and manufacturing capabilities, Dr. Shen’s work aims to accelerate the translation of biologics from early discovery to commercialization. His focus on reducing development timelines and production costs is helping to unlock broader access to advanced biologics in the veterinary field.
